GP Collinsville 2018 Breakdown

Hey everyone, GP Collinsville 2018 has come and gone. Many of the US’s best players, along with a visitor from across the ocean, showed up for our first big competitive foray into the Full Reiya + Lapis New Frontiers format. As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Scheherazade has held her crown post-banning and maintains her spot at the top deck of the format. While she may not be the true unbeatable juggernaut she was last format, she still has the tools to consistently win games and take top spots. What does that mean for you? What other lists put up results in the new format? I have information to answer these questions from the results. To start with, let’s dive into the results.
First, our top 8:

As you may have seen watching coverage that weekend, a full 6/8 lists were Scheherazades, broken down between Derrik’s B/R/G list, Jean-Paul’s B/U/G mirror breaking list, and Team Outer World’s classic G/B/Spirit Stone lists from last season. Fighting in alongside them is Andrew’s continued success piloting G/R Kirik, and a Gill the Gifted Conjurer list piloted by Joseph Bowling.

What you can’t see from these results is that quite a number of decks outside or Scheherazade sat at the top tables going into the last round, and our top 16 and 32 lists are full of interesting options if you want something solid to play outside the reigning queen of the format. Let’s take a look at the breakdowns:

A full nine rulers says that outside the knowledge that Sherry sits on top, we either have a very broad second tier of decks or we have a lot of exploring to do below the surface. With ARG States, the Gencon Championship, GP Denver, and months of locals left in this format, it looks like there’s a fair amount of learning left to do, and options at the competitive and semi-competive level to play around with. I’ve got a selection of the lists from the Top 32 to let you get your feet wet and start making your way through the format. Let’s start with the most competitively important batch, the high-performing Scheherazade lists from the event. We say a few very distinct builds within the top 8, so it’s clear there is some wiggle room to explore within this ruler if you are interested in competitive results (though you need to make sure your preferred build is solid in the mirror, as Jean-Paul showed)

The Time Spinning Witch has seen results in Cluster Constructed over in Europe, and appears to have some game in New Frontiers. Does she have what it takes to break into the top tiers of this format? Our next couple lists aren’t defined by their ruler, but by Heroic Tales enabling a certain seven drop. Umr-at-tawil combo decks have seen some local play since he and Fayli were printed, but WOM’s new chant lets the decks get faster, more consistent, and give you a way to combo sans-graveyard. Next up is the terror from TSW spoilers that’s yet to manifest, Lumia Rachel. While the list got some impressive tools in WOM, it has been overshadowed consistently by Scheherazade.
